The Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) participated in an interface session with students from Kamuzu Academy (Forms 5 and 6) and various schools in and around Kasungu (Form 4) during a careers fair organized by the Kamuzu Academy Careers Department.
The Careers Fair aimed to expose students to a wide range of university study opportunities available both locally and internationally while also providing insight into potential career paths after graduation. Universities and professional regulatory authorities made presentations on their mandates and roles, followed by interactive engagements with students at designated information booths.
Representing MCM, Dr. Yotam Moyo delivered a presentation on career pathways within the medical, dental, and allied health professions. He highlighted key subject requirements for entry into these fields, including mathematics, biology, physical science, and chemistry. Dr. Moyo also emphasized competency as a core value in healthcare practice, describing it as the integration of knowledge, skills, and appropriate attitudes. He encouraged students to cultivate these attributes early, alongside passion and a clear sense of purpose when pursuing health-related careers.
Further, Dr. Moyo urged students to consider evolving global trends, including the impact of artificial intelligence, when making career choices and to prioritize market-relevant health professions.
The MCM commends Kamuzu Academy for organizing the Careers Fair and for extending participation to students from surrounding schools. This inclusive approach not only broadens access to career guidance but also strengthens community engagement. MCM further notes that exposure to good ethical and professional conduct principles at an early stage helps nurture future practitioners who are informed, ethical, and compliant.
Students demonstrated high levels of enthusiasm, and MCM engaged in meaningful discussions on medical, dental, and allied health career paths during both group sessions and one-on-one interactions. The Council’s participation in the event forms part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of its regulatory mandate.
