As part of its ongoing efforts to bridge the knowledge and information gap among health practitioners, the Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) has continued to implement interface awareness sessions across district, private, and CHAM hospitals nationwide. These sessions are conducted annually in the respective health facilities.
The awareness sessions are designed to foster engagement and dialogue on key regulatory frameworks, including the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, which defines the mandate and functions of the MCM. They also cover the Code of Ethics and Professionalism, which guides the conduct of both students and registered practitioners, as well as new regulations, guidelines, procedures, and developments in medical, dental, and allied health practice.
The most recent sessions were conducted in facilities across five districts, including Kasungu District Hospital, Nkhamenya Community Hospital, Mzimba District Hospital, Embangweni Hospital, Ekwendeni Hospital, Karonga District Hospital, St. Anne’s Community Hospital, Chitipa District Hospital, Kaseye Community Hospital, and Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
A key emphasis during these engagements was the importance of regulatory compliance. Practitioners were strongly encouraged to ensure they are duly registered before practicing and to remain up-to-date with their continuing professional development (CPD) requirements. Practitioners were encouraged to get more information on the new CPD requirements accessible through https://medcouncilmw.org/continuous-professional-development/. Compliance not only fulfills regulatory obligations but also ensures that practitioners remain competent and aligned with current clinical guidelines and protocols, ultimately enhancing patient care.
In addition, the MCM announced that the development of its integrated digital system is nearing completion. By the end of May 2026, key modules, including student indexing, practitioner registration and renewal, CPD management, camp registration, and education and training, will be fully accessible online. This development will significantly improve efficiency by enabling practitioners to access services remotely without the need for physical visits to MCM offices.
The MCM extends its sincere appreciation to all health facilities for providing the platform and time to engage with practitioners and to the practitioners themselves for their active participation.
Moving forward, continued collaboration remains essential to upholding standards in medical, dental, and allied health practice, while ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality healthcare services to the public.
